Some of our key achievements?

  • Our membership increased by 300% since 2004 through raising the profile of Positive Women Inc.
  • Our funding increased by 600% since 2004.
  • We jointly launched the Travelers Campaign 2006 with Family Planning NZ to raise awareness of HIV risk to New Zealanders travelling overseas.
  • Positive Women Inc was on the organising committee of the first regional Pan Pacific Conference for the Pacific region on HIV and AIDS held in Auckland, New Zealand 2006.
  • Positive Women Inc has been a representative on the NZ National Medical Council advisory group since 2006.
  • The National Coordinator presented at the first International Women's Conference on HIV and AIDS held in Nairobi, Kenya 2007.
  • We launched the Destigmatisation Campaign on 20 February 2008 targeting women in New Zealand - the campaign attracted extensive media coverage and included advertisements on TV, women's magazines, women's websites, on the side of buses, on postcards and posters, and a short TV Commercial (which has not been run yet but is currently sitting with the TV station sensor board).
  • We produced a documentary following the four HIV positive women who were the faces of the Destigmatisation Campaign.
  • We launched the Positive Women Inc website www.positivewomen.org.nz
  • We have run HIV Positive Speakers training since June 2008
  • Positive Women Inc was a member of Secretariat for the Pan Pacific gathering for HIV positive people held in New Zealand in September 2008.
  • Positive Women Inc is a member of New Zealand HIV Awareness and Advocacy Group.
  • We support women living with HIV in personal difficulties - we purchased milk formula for an HIV positive woman's baby as she was recommended not to breast feed and she was unable to afford formula; we assisted with payment for a lawyer for an African HIV positive woman being deported back to South Africa because of her HIV status (this case has been declined twice and is currently under appeal).
  • We produced a New Zealand HIV, Pregnancy and Women's Health booklet.
  • The National Coordinator does regional support visits to women in isolated regions of New Zealand.
  • Positive Women Inc and Body Positive members, in conjunction with the Community AIDS Resource Team that works out of the Infectious disease clinic of Auckland Hospital, formed the Joint Straight Arrows Support network.
  • Positive Women Inc is on the organizing committee for the Annual Candle-Light Memorial Ceremony.
  • We organized the Positively Glamorous Fashion Show on World AIDS Day to commemorate 20 years of World AIDS Day, raise awareness of HIV, and as a fundraiser for the newly established Positive Women Inc Torrens Fund to pay for HIV positive children in New Zealand to attend special camps in Australia for HIV positive children and teens.
  • We produced the Treat Yourself Right booklet for women living with HIV.
  • We ran a Digital Story Telling workshop - four HIV positive women produced their stories digitally, which are available to listen to on the website and will be made into a DVD.
  • National Coordinator wrote a thesis for her Masters in Social Practice entitled Stigma and Women Living with HIV; A Cooperative Inquiry.
  • We produced the HIV and AIDS Education in Schools resource booklet for educators.
  • Positive Women Inc is a member on the UNAIDS PCB NGO Advisory Group.
  • Together with Body Positive, Positive Women Inc produced a resource booklet entitled HIV: A New Diagnosis.
  • National Coordinator contributed a chapter to a book for Cornell University in the USA entitled HIV policies globally and their impact on women.
  • Wayne Hudson rode the Etape du Tour de France as a fundraiser and to raise HIV awareness.
  • Three Positive Women Inc members attended the International AIDS Conference in Vienna, Austria 2010.
  • Empowering story by an HIV positive member of Positive Women was published in Marie Claire in June 2010.
